The root canal treatment (removal of the dental nerve, cleaning, preparing, sterilisation and finally the filling of the root canal) represents a "key" field in dentistry, because many factors depending on how correct it is done: the lifetime of a tooth, his long presence in the dental arcade, the success of the cast metal partial denture.
The new electronic techniques that we use to localise the apex (the top of the dental root) with the apex-locator, to identify all the canals with help of the magnification systems, as well as the rotation techniques to prepare the canals and to fill them tri-dimensionally, make this process much easier, transforming it from a blind manoeuvre into a perfectly controlled one.
The situations when canal treatment is recommendable are:
- profound decays or another affection of the tooth that cause the apparition of an abscess
- high sensitivity at hot or cold food
- spontaneous pain
- as therapeutic appliance for periodontal and prosthetic therapies
