The inlay-onlay are actually some "fillings" that are created in the laboratory by the dental technician. The advantages of these fillings (ceramics, composite or noble metals) compared to the classical filling made by the dentist in his dental office are:

- The higher resistance in time because of the homogeneity of the material
- Better marginal enclosure of the cavity, thus
- A lower risk that a marginal decays appears.
